Last night I finally got to sit down and watch the Richard Donner vision of Superman II.
I have to say, IMO it is a damn shame that Donner and the Salkind's had such creative differences.
I'm going to be referring to the Donner cut and the Salkind's cut even though I know Richard Lester directed the released Superman II. I just feel that it is probably the Salkind's influence and interference that led us to see the movie we did rather than Richard Lester's.
Donner's Superman II was so much better, more mythology, more Brandon and less "flaky". For me the Salkind's Superman II has always been a disappointment following on from Superman: The Movie. It seemed to be overly cheesy and poked fun at Supes. From the whole Eiffel Tower terrorist plot to Niagara Falls to the ending with Supes and Lois.
My only gripe with Donner's version is Supes destroying the Fortress of Solitude, I mean *what*?
I wondered if anyone else had watched it (Scotty? Pedro? Maria?) and what you thought!
Dick Donner I salute you!

I have it but haven't gotten around to seeing it completely... You gotta admit thou that the scene of Lester's Superman 2 was missed in the Donner Cut That is my favorite scene....Whoosh he flies back and the magazines and papers in the newsstand rattle as he fies above and is standing in front of the window with his arms crossed looking very badass and tough he says would you care to step out side General Zod!!!...I love this scene!!!

Yeah, there was that... Maybe we'll one day get an amalgam of the two movies for one definitive classic.
Pedro, you have got to watch it all the way through, I'd like your opinion on the ending!

I had read about this cut, but then I forgot about it. I'll have rent it and see. I loved the released Superman 2, but I was in elementary school when it was first out, so I didn't have very refined taste.
I do love that scene where he asks Zod to step outside.
I'm fascinated to see the other version, though. Just a new version of Superman with Christopher Reeve in it is VERY exciting.

I saw the Richard Donner version today at the store and had to pick it up. All I can say is WOW! This movie is so much better than the one that was released.
SPOILERS***
The New beginning was Great and the chemistry between Lois and Clark was played up to perfection (especially the Hotel scene at Niagara falls) and the Fight over Times Square was Brilliant, better edited and more exciting. The scene where Superman gets thrown into the Statue of Liberty's Torch was awesome. I loved seeing more of Marlon Brando's Jor-El and the scenes with Jor-El and Kal-El were touching and explained a whole lot more to the story. The part where Superman get his powers back explained a lot (which possibly explains Jor-El in the show Smallville, even if just a little even though the writers of Smallville have taken it to extremes) Jor-El explained that even though he has been dead long ago; His essence was kept alive in the crystals in the fortress of Solitude and when that essence came forth from the last crystal "The son became the father and the father became the son" Jor-El's essence merged with Kal-El's and restored his powers (which was left out in the Lester version)
I also Loved the ending of this Movie much more than the one that was released. I never really bought the magical Kiss of forgetfulness. The ending where Superman turns back time ties part II with Part I, and for me, made more sense.
The only part that to me didn't jive with this movie was Clark's scene in the diner at the end (though fun to watch) because if Superman turned back time; then the initial fight wouldn't be remembered by the bully that beat Clark up in the first place.
I did enjoy seeing Jod & company put back into the Phantom Zone and I understood why Superman destroyed the Fortress...as Long as Lex Luthor knew about his Hideaway then Superman was always vulnerable, it is bad enough that Lex knows about Kryptonite, so I think that Superman destroyed the fortress to keep Lex and any future villains out...plus with all the crystals destroyed what good was the fortress anyway?
For me; This will always be the Best version and the true sequel to "Superman the Movie" If you haven't seen it then I highly recommend that you do ;D

Scotty, I just glanced at a few of your spoilers, but they make me want to go out and rent this version this week! It sounds really cool.
Thanks for telling us about it. Maybe we can chat about it more after I see it.

Scotty, that is exactly how I felt, right down to the I don't quite get the Diner scene as like you said it couldn't have happened, still can be forgiven the slip up.
As for destroying the Fortress I understood why but I was just so shocked when Kal-El did.
For me too, this is the sequel to Superman: The Movie...
And it also ties in better with Returns r.e. Jason, in the Donner film, Kal-El had his way with Lois as Superman, hence inheritance of super powers!
I love continuity!
