Well, like a lameass, I didn't see Superman Returns in the theater. I really wanted to, but never dot around to it.
I just saw it on DVD and I'm madly in love with it! I really regret that I didn't see it in the theater. And now that I know it was on IMAX 3-D, I'm really wishing I hadn't been so lazy about seeing this movie last summer!
I have an emotional response to the Superman movies, more than the show. I like Smallville, even though it's darker than my preference. But the movies, well, WOW!
They were so intense for me when I was a kid and they were first in the theaters. I had a mad crush on Superman/Christopher Reeve. I think that Brandon did a decent job. I love that he looks and talks a bit like Christopher Reeve. But that also made me miss Chris more. He had a bigger body, thicker neck, more square Superman-like jaw, and sweet, vulnerabilty to his voice.
However, I think Brandon stood on his own as an interesting performance, especially in his scenes with Lois. When he was Clark, he seemed like he was doing a Christopher Reeve impersonation of Clark.
So I have a few questions that are spoiler-heavy.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN SUPERMAN RETURNS YET!!!
OK, I love that Superman has a kid. That was such a cool surprise. I started to wonder about it earlier than when Lex guessed it, because the kid's health problems were just too acute. It made sense, since Clarke has slept with Lois right after all of his powers were stripped from him in Superman 2. He would have been especially weak.
But, now that the kid has been exposed to Kryptonite, is he as powerful as Superman? If not, wouldn't he have been powerful when he was in the water near all of the Kryptonite?
Conversely, wouldn't Superman had NO power in the water, with all the Kryptonite in the water too?
Did anyone else get really irritated that Superman had the strength to take a whole continent out into space when he still had some Kryptonite IN him, and there was Kryptonite all around him. That just bugged the hell out of me.
In Superman 2, Superman took Lois's memory of them sleeping together and her learning his true identity. So, does she know that he is the father of the kid? I mean, did she find out she was pregant, and think, damn, I haven't had sex in 6 months, how did THAT happen?!?!
And does Richard White, her fiance, know the kid isn't his?
And when did Superman figure out the kid was his? At first, he was jealous of her having a kid. Was it the kid's kiss on the cheek that cured him? Is that how he figured it out? Or did he just do the math? "Hmmm... I slept with Lois 6 years ago, the kid is 5 years and 3 months" or whatever the hell it is.
Inquiring minds want to know. I don't know if any of you have seen this movie recently or remember all of this stuff, but does anyone have any theories?

Well, you are not alone, I didn't get to see Superman Returns at the cinema either. So I bought myself the R2 13 dics Collectors set. 5 of the 13 dics were scratched and wouldn't play properly including the Superman Returns one, so I saw up to Lois and Supes flight and then about 10 minutes after to the end.Right with you on that comment! I am with you again on these comments.
For me Christopher Reeve has always been and will always be Superman. I have to say when Brandon was casts I was a bit fearful as Superman was always played by a Reeve:
Steve Reeve - radio voice George Reeve - original TV show Chris Reeve
I do feel Brandon was picked because of his uncanny resemblance to Chris, but in saying that he did fill the suit well and imitated Chris well especially as Clark.
I felt that the role of Superman was greatly underplayed in the movie and can only assume this was done to allow fans to "get used to the water" as it were: a okay folks there is a new guy so lets ease us all in. I am hoping (if there is a sequel) Superman has a bigger role next time.As soon as I saw the kid and his ailments I twigged it was Superman's son, as to me it was obvious. Now, when Clark fathered the child he was powerless, to my understanding the chamber did something to his DNA on a fundamental basis, as it housed the last rays of the red sun of Krypton. Ergo, the kid should be "normal".This is my thinking following what is a continuity screw up: The super genes were not replaced but turned off, so in the kid the genes are in a passive stage, BUT surely it is exposure to normal unreactive kryptonite that turns them on?
All of that kryptonite in the water came from the radioactive piece of kryptonite that landed in Addis Ababa, so it must all be contaminated Kryptonite.
Clark's piece from the farm was normal kryptonite and therefore had no effect.
Follow these thoughts on and the kid should be doubled over!Correct - the kryptonite was essentially cloned from the irradiated poisonous stuff that landed in Addis Ababa.Oh God YES!! This was for my the silliest part and the part that spoilt the movie. That amount of Kryptonite would lay Superman out flat, there was tonnes of the stuff, and then to have him fly with it, major continuity screw up.Didn't the kiss just take away the fact that she knows who Superman is and not that she slept with Clark?I'd say he knows he isn't dad.He was suspicious when he saw/Jimmy told him about the child. The curing kiss confirmed it.
Anyway, there are my thoughts!

I have always been a Superman fan. Christopher Reeve defined the role to perfection. Brandon Routh did an excellent job in continuing the role, which was no small endeavor, After all Christopher Reeve left some pretty big shoes to fill. I Loved this movie! I had the pleasure of seeing it in IMAX 3D so the awesome factor was doubled. The only bad thing was that the whole movie was not in 3D just certain segments. the scenes that were in 3D were mostly the ones with Superman doing Super stuff. (The smallville section, The Plane/shuttle rescue etc.) Here is my take on some of the continuity issues (for what its worth) In Superman 2 Superman's kiss did erase Lois's memory but as with some memory loss she could have gotten some of it back gradually (pregnancy perhaps?) She might have remembered that she slept with Superman but not necessarily that Superman was Clark Kent. I believe that Lois had partial memory recovery, Remember that Lois was always in love with Superman not Clark and the time that they were together alone Clark was Superman (no glasses) so in Lois's mind they were separate, so she might remember her night with Superman and not Clark. I do not think that the Kryptonite activated the boy's powers. I think that they are there always and that he will grow into them with time. The reason that he was able to throw a grand piano across the room was a adrenaline Rush (combined with his dormant Super powers) He saw his mom being hurt and instinct took over because he wanted to save her. That is why he couldn't open the door when they were trapped when the yacht was sinking... the threat though serious wasn't immediate, plus who knows maybe if Richard White didn't beat him to it maybe the Kid would have opened the door as well? I believe that the reason that Kryptonite didn't have any effect on the kid was because that he isn't pure kryptonian like his father. I Think that Richard White knows that the Kid isn't his, He just Loves both Lois and the child so much that he doesn't care. I admit that the kryptonite/water/flying with a huge land mass puzzled me a bid as well. I can only figure that Superman was so full of rage and that combined with a super adrenaline rush helped him muster every last ounce of his strength to get the Kryptonite infected land mass into space in order to save everyone (much in the same way that he reversed the earth's rotation in Superman 1 turning back time and saving Lois from the car trapped in the earthquake.) That is why after the danger was over, Superman drained completely fell to earth and went into a coma. I also think that it wasn't the child's kiss that brought Superman back out of the coma (even though it played a big part) I Think it was Lois whispering in Superman's ear that did the actual awakening. even though we didn't hear what Lois said; I took it that she told Superman that the Child was his and that was what gave Superman the will to live. Anyway that is my take on the movie; It may not be right but that is how I saw it. If you buy the DVD I recommend getting the 2 disc deluxe edition. The behind the scenes extras are a lot of fun! Plus you get to see Brandon Routh working out

Both of your answers, though different in some ways, helped me to see that maybe there is supposed to be more than what they showed.
I think that the fact that people could interpret the movie so differently shows that they really should have made some of that stuff clearer.
I think that they definitely shoudl have shown us what Lois said in Superman's ear. I assume it was that she loved him, since he seemed to believe her when he overheard her tell Richard that she hadn't been in love with Superman.
Superman never had healing powers, but it would be interesting if his child had different powers than he had.
I still think that the krypton might have awakened the kid's powers, but I guess it will remain to be seen how the whole thing gets explained in the next movie.

Scotty, where exactly can you see Mr Routh working out? Its purely for research you understand! Mom and I rewatched most of the movie last night, when Lois and Jason are captured by Lex and he holds the hollow-shaped block of Kryptonite towards the kid, what exactly does Jason do? He looks like he has a brain freeze, could this be his powers being kicked from dormant to active? And then Scotty your idea of the powers being kick-started by a Super adrenaline rush and fear for his mom?

Scotty, where exactly can you see Mr Routh working out? Its purely for research you understand! LOL You can see Mr Routh working out on disc 2 of the 2 disc deluxe set. You get to see Brandon lifting weights, practicing flying on various cables and you get to see him swimming in a pool (without his shirt) ;D It is also funny to see the costume development process. They made many duplicates of the Superman costume. they made muscle padding to go under the suit, since they weren't sure if Brandon Routh would muscle up enough before shooting began ... (The padding wasn't needed for the film ...the muscles are all Brandon...LOL). They showed Brandon getting his hair cut and styled and the funniest thing... you get to see His "Stunt curl". They made several different hair curls that they were prepared to attach to the front of Brandon's hair to give him Superman's iconic curl (just in case his natural hair wouldn't stay in place.) It was mentioned that they did not need to use the fake curls as Brandon's hair held the style with out them. Those were just a few of the interesting stuff you get to see on disc 2. Here are some screen caps from disc 2... 1. Brandon Routh in the CGI suit (before the sensors were attached) 2. In the pool learning how to fly 3. in the flying harness... 4. Working out in the Gym with his trainer
