I just caught the new Boulevard of Broken Dreams about Glenn Quinn.
I had heard the rumors of his drug abuse and that he died of a drug overdose, but I had never heard the details.
During the Roseanne show he had bought a house in the Hollywood Hills and also invested in a bar. His friends and family said it was a dangerous road he went down as an active alcoholic owning a bar. One of his friends said that he was struggling with drugs way back then.
Apparently, he was always a hard drinker, but it got progressively worse between the time he ended the Roseanne show and when he started on Angel.
His friends who talked on the show discussed how he was kicked off of Angel for drinking, partying, and how that affected his professionalism on the set.
The next person who hired him said that he found out he was the only one in Hollywood who didn't know that Quinn had been "kicked off of Angel for drinking". But he didn't show up for that next job a couple of times because he was passed out from drinking binges.
They didn't say when his problem with heroin started, but they said that after he lost that last show, he ended up spiraling into his heroin addiction, selling his house and interest in the bar to support his habit, living on friend's couches. Then he eventually shot himself with a fatal dose of heroin while sitting on a friend's couch.
His castmates from Roseanne helped to pay for his funeral.
Maybe a lot of Angel/Buffy fans already know the whole story, but this was the first time I had heard it. It's sad that such a talented, charismatic guy let drugs destroy his life. I always loved Doyle and I wished that he had remained a part of the show. I wonder if it would have made a difference in Glenn Quinn's life if he'd kept that job, or if he was already so out of control that his descent was inevitable.
