Smallville, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill also returning; no word on Reaper, Aliens in America.
Eric Kripke (and all you Supernatural fans), you can breathe easily. When the creator of Supernatural spoke to TV.com in late January, he said, "I'm officially nervous" when the topic of his show getting renewed for a fourth season came up.
Young Lex Luthor let his anger over being bald control his life.
The CW today announced its batch of early pickups for this fall's season, and Supernatural--about a pair of brothers who hunt demons across the country--was one of six shows that have been cleared to return by the network. Though Supernatural's return wasn't necessarily a lock, between Kripke's nervousness, its new competition in Lost (which moved time slots and now butts heads with Supernatural), and CW's disappointing cancellations last year (ahem Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls), the show's devout fans were understandably on edge.
Also returning next year will be Supernatural's lead in, the Superman-as-a-youngster drama Smallville. The show will return for its eighth season, which many think will be its last.
Coming back for its sophomore season will be Gossip Girl, which was the first of the new shows to receive a full-season order. The hit among the young set follows the lives of students attending one of New York City's top private high schools.
K-Fed about to serve some shorty.
The sudsy One Tree Hill will be back for season six to continue the back-and-forth between a group of young friends in a North Carolina town. All that's left to decide is whether recurring guest star Kevin Federline will return.
The final scripted show with an early renewal is Chris Rock's Everyone Hates Chris. The half-hour comedy is loosely based on Rock's life growing up in Brooklyn, New York.
Finally, the network's top program, America's Next Top Model, has been guaranteed not only an 11th edition, but the CW also went right ahead and announced a 12th edition as well. The show is currently in its 10th iteration, and added new judge Paulina Porizkova, who recently spoke with TV.com about her new job.
Noticeably missing from the list sent out today are freshman shows Reaper and Aliens in America, whose futures remain uncertain. Neither show was asked to return to production after the strike was resolved, but both had new episodes yet to air.
