The pet food recall keeps getting bigger and bigger. Rice gluten is now added to wheat gluten as a contaminated or potentially contaminated ingredient. It's pretty shocking to me that even the really high end, "natural" and "gourmet" brands use the exact same ingredients from the exact same suppliers as the low end brands. The reps make a big deal about how much more "pure" and pesticide free their products are, and it ends up that they're made with many of the same ingredients from China, a country that has no respect for it's own people, let alone for what kinds of pesticides and rat poisons used on food sold for animals. I just found out that the boutique brand dog food I buy has the same ingredients from Menu Inc that are found in really low grade brands like Purina. They may not put animal by products in the brands (by products refer to the throwaway parts of the animal, like hooves, feet, eyeballs, intestines, and any rotten pieces that have been left on the meat packing plant's floor). But who can tell for sure? We clearly cannot trust these companies. I'm glad I started making my dog's food myself when this fiasco started. I just wish my cat would eat something other than his regular food. It hasn't been recalled yet, but other products by the same company have. I just don't trust this manufacturers at all anymore. The most updated list of recalled brands is here: www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/petfoodrecall/#Dog

Thats just terrible Maria. They can be taken to Trading Standards for false advertising. I feed my pair of cutties 'Pedigree' dog food - I have always found this ok. But I will check where its made etc...

Is Purina such a low grade brand over there? That sorta shocks me a bit. My cats always eat Purina ONE cat food... it's a pretty expensive brand here (and not to mention, the only food my cats want to eat). My dog doesn't really even eat that much dog food, we keep trying different brands but she's only interested in the cat food mostly

Purina is considered quite a good food here in the UK

Purina is low-quality over here. Anything you can get at the grocery store is low-quality. But even the Purina brand they sell at veterinarian's offices is made from very low-quality ingredients. It's just pushed on the vets as "specially-formulated." Because it costs more and is sold by vets, the vets make a big profit off of it.

I've heard about the low grade of ingredients in manufactured dog food for years from trainers and other dog behaviorists. However, I've been researching how to prepare healthy food for my dog and came up some very disturbing claims that not only are there multiple preservatives in almost all dog food that destroy their kidneys and kills thousands of dogs a year, but euthanized dogs and cats, full of the poison that killed them, are sold to pet food companies and used as "meat" for pet food fed to dogs and cats. I think I'm going to go be ill now. What the hell is wrong with people that they'd pull this crap? www.thedogfoodconspiracy.com/dog-food-secrets.php

I think I'm going to go be ill now. What the hell is wrong with people that they'd pull this crap? www.thedogfoodconspiracy.com/dog-food-secrets.phpWhat in the hell is wrong with people?!? I don't have a dog yet, but I do have four birds, and something weird happened about six or seven months ago. When I buy food for them, I don't buy seed due to the fact that it's high in fat, and would be the equivalent of us living off a strict Hostess Twinkee diet. So I bought them the food that I always do, and noticed that after a day or two that they hadn't made much progress in eating it. All of them became very lathargic, and I thought they had all come down with a virus, and would soon be dead. It didn't occur to me that it could be the food because I have fed it to them for years with no problem at all. I could tell the birds had lost weight, so I fed them seed for about a week, and then bought a new package of their regular seed, and they ate it just fine. When I asked my feed distributor if they had ever had any problems from that particular brand, they said no. I thought the whole thing might have been a fluke, maybe just a bad batch was unintentially made, until months later when cats and dogs started dying. I really don't like to jump to conclusions, or place blame where it doesn't belong, but since a lot of these ingredients for pet food come from China, where the health standards for food are not as high as in the U.S., it makes me very suspicious. I wouldn't even rule out sabatage at this point. Also, shame on these American companies who knowingly assured all the pet owners that the food was safe when they knew damn well that there was a good possibility that it wasn't. I hope they get their pants sued off of them.
