I've never heard of this holiday. What does it signify? Do you get it off from work? Is it a big hoiday in the UK?

I've never heard of this holiday. What does it signify? Do you get it off from work? Is it a big hoiday in the UK? Sadly it isn't a big holiday and we don't get a day off though it is being pushed for. Saint George is the patron Saint of England, as in George and the Dragon. Born in Coventry apparently, he slew a pretty big dragon. It used to be a big feast day that rivaled Christmas but the RC Church and other organizations have debunked it. A traditional custom at this time was to wear a red rose in one's lapel, though with changes in fashion this is not as widely done. Another custom is to fly or adorn the St. George's Cross flag in some way: pubs in particular can be seen on April 23 festooned with garlands of St. George's crosses. (Funnily enough though, the Labour party stole the red rose as their symbol, should never have been alone! Gits!) The Irish, the Welsh and the Scots all celebrate their Saint's Day's but the English kinda don't. Me, I am Anglo-Saxon stock and proud!

Dead Like Me quote of the day:
Daisy: You know, George, you have your very own saint. George: I'd rather have a pony.
Though seriously, I had no idea it was a saint day. Never noticed the huge England flag hanging on the front of the local pub (named The George and Dragon coincidentally)... But whoo, our saint killed a dragon!
