I thought it would be kind of cool to have a thread that was dedicated to a Profound moment in your life, a moment that really touched you, or a moment that made you learn something great about yourself or someone else.
This really touched me. I was 19 and I got my first apartment. It was right by a lake and it had a great trail to go running. I went out running like I normally did and there is a part of the trail that turns into a bridge because it's over the lake. I was getting close to that point, when I saw an old woman fishing in the lake. I heard her from a distance because she was kind of mumbling really loud and talking to herself.
As I got closer to the bridge I saw a large turtle on the bridge. It was very strange because first I had never seen one that big before and secondly they never get to close to humans. I ran up to it and it was really awful. It was gasping in pain with a huge hook in it's neck bleeding all over the bridge. My heart broke the second I saw it. I tried to reach out to help it but out of fear it tried to stick it's head back into it's shell and just damaging itself even more.
What was worse was the old woman fishing started yelling at it. Saying that she wasted her hook on it and it got in the way of her fishing and it was a stupid turtle and why should I care. I was completely disgusted and I couldn't even finish my run. I just left.
The whole experience turned me off from running around there for several weeks. At the time I was working on a big series of paintings for a collection. I had this huge unpainted canvas, that until then had no subject. But then I thought about the turtle and I really wanted to make a painting for it.
I made this beautiful, huge turtle merging from the water. His shell had this amazing design and texture. I think I used all my oil paint on it but it was so special.
The next day I felt so much better about it like I got some closure. I decided to go back to the lake and have a good run. I ran until I got close to the bridge part and I picked a couple flowers. When I got to the bridge I put them in the spot where the turtle had been. I said a little prayer to God. Something about why there is so much pain and loss in the world. Then when I glanced up I saw a tiny turtle on a rock. The baby turtle lined up exactly to where I had placed the flowers. I stared at it for a couple seconds and then it went back into the water. I understand exactly what God was trying to show me and it really touched me.
