Captain America is dead.....
In the latest issue of the comic book, Steve Rogers, the star-spangled hero with the gleaming shield and World War II roots, is shot to death - and his publisher, Marvel Comics, pledges that it is neither a dream, a hoax nor a short-term stunt.
The issue hit the stands today and shows the iconic hero gunned down on the steps of a federal courthouse; he was arriving there as a fugitive, a resistance leader to a federal Super Hero Registration Act that has been a key Marvel story lines for the past year.
The role of homeland rebel is a far cry from the hero's early days. He first appeared in March 1941 and became the most popular of the purely patriotic comic characters drawn up for wartime duty and by far the most enduring of them.
Marvel has plans for a "Captain America" movie in the next few years so there is cause to wonder whether the character (or at least the costume) will make a return.
Still, the character's co-creator, 93-year-old Joe Simon, told the Associated Press that he was distressed by the news that his old war-horse character is gone. "We really need him now," Simon said.
"Captain America" will continue publishing for at least several issues (next month's edition will involve his autopsy), and fans will certainly debate the "realness" of this death.
Other characters have died and then come back through some manner of miracle (most famously, Superman, who was killed off briefly in 1993) or had someone else step into their costume and identity -- the Flash was killed in 1986 but his nephew took on the tights and the moniker without missing a super-speed step.
