There aren't too many shows that run new episodes in the summer. This is one of the few.
Season 6 just started last week. It began with a bang.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Sheriff Walt Bannerman died!
How sad is that?
I always liked Walt. He had the most personality of any of the main characters. And he was super hot.
It was kind of funny, though, because the guy who played him had gotten fat and was starting to go bald. He wasn't hot anymore. I wonder if he let himself go because he wasn't planning to stay on, or they let fired him because he lost his cuteness. I think it was probably just a coincidence that he got killed off just when he wasn't so attractive anymore.
As much as I liked Walt, I think it was a good dramatic move to kill him off. Since he and Johnny were so close and Johnny's psychic abilities had solved so many cases and saved so many lives, there wasn't much conflict happening.
Bringing in a new, skeptical sheriff who will think Johnny's a whack job creates some much needed tension on this show that had fallen into such a predictable formula of Johnny seeing the future over and over as he changed it until he got it right the person was saved.
The season premiere followed that formula, except that after Johnny saves Reverend Purdy from the fire, it's Walt that dies instead. And Johnny doesn't get a chance to save him. So sad!
Walt dying also opens up the door for Johnny to finally get to be with Sarah Bannerman, Walt's widow and the mother of Johnny's child. That's the big relationship that the viewers have supposed to want since Johnny woke up from his coma to find that his fiance had married someone else and had Johnny's child during his six year sleep.
But I can't stand the actress or character of Sarah. She had that horrible haircut for all those years that made her look awful. She finally grew that out this year, thank God. However, she still has no personality at all. She's not fun. She has terrible communication skills, never really talking about her feelings. She's frequently rude and obtuse. She and Johnny don't have an ounce of chemistry. I would rather that they killed her off, instead.
So far the pace this year has been very boring. They need some energy and serious conflict.
The weirdest thing was that after five years of the Stillson arc from original Dead Zone movie, the season premiere seemed to end that arc too. The dark man who was part of some Illuminati type conspiracy organization and was pushing Stillson towards the presidency died in that fire, too. Suddenly when Johnny touches Stillson, he doesn't see the capitol building exploding in a nuclear holocaust anymore.
I liked that arc! I thought they should have had it end much more dramatically. I'm just hoping that it will come back later in the season, with the vision of Stillson causing a holocaust back again when Johnny touches him. Johnny should have to go through a whole love of drama to keep that whole thing from happening. I loved all the episodes where he interacted with himself and his son from the future after the holocaust to try to keep it from happening. Now that was some good TV.
Does anyone else watch this?
