Jay Leno and Conan O'Brian came back last night without their writers.
Somehow David Letterman and his production company Worldwide Pants were able to finagle a contract of their own with the Writer's Guild of America. So Letterman and Craig Ferguson's show (produced by Letterman's company) came back last night WITH their writers.
I watched them and they were both quite funny! Letterman had one of his famous Top 10 Lists with actual writers from the guild from shows like the Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Law and Order reading the Top 10 Demands of the Writers' Strike.
WGA member and active strike participant Robin Williams was the first guest back on Letterman, underscoring the fact that the WGA endorses Letterman's return, while they are still picketing Leno.
In contrast, the WGA is condemning Republican candidate Mike Huckabee crossing the picket line to appear on Leno last night. Huckabee has claimed to be the "union friendly" Republican candidate, but he has alienated unions with this move.

I don't know if this has been said yet, but they only have 8 of the 16 episodes for season 4 of Lost done.

From United Hollywood: UH has confirmed from off-the-record sources that progress is indeed being made in the informal talks, and that creative solutions to the biggest differences between the AMPTP and the WGA have gotten the tentative and cautious approval of both sides. This does not mean there is a deal in principle yet. It means we may, finally, be very close to one -- as close as days away. And while we're cautiously optimistic about what we're hearing, it comes with a real caveat. Just as happened with the DGA deal, points that are agreed to in informal negotiation can be thought of as points on a deal memo -- but it's the drafting language that comes from hammering out those points that makes them legally binding. And our sources say that draft language doesn't yet exist. That's a big part of what will be happening in the next few days, as negotiations continue. Until the WGA and the companies have enshrined the deal points -- whatever they are -- into real draft language, those deal points can't be thought of as final. The only reason we've gotten as far as we have in the negotiations is because the pressure has stayed on. If we let up on that pressure, even a little, it could affect the draft language of the agreement. It could, in a very real way, diminish the power of our negotiators and our Guild now, when it matters most. Stay out there. Stay on the lines, stay informed. Stay strong. We'll have more soon. unitedhollywood.blogspot.com/2008/02/ny-times-reports-progress-in-talks.html

That's great they finally work on the issues it shame this came at cost of our shows this season. So many shows ended so quickly and quite few might not come back next year so feels rather disappointing to hear they only now getting things solved.

I moved to northern California, so I can't watch the KTLA entertainment news anymore. I don't have the LA entertainment scoop on the strike anymore. But I did see this. Here's hoping! From TV Guide online: community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-Editors-Blog/Wga-Strike-Watch/Wga-Review-Strike/800032526The latest buzz from the inner circles at the informal strike talks indicates that "there is strong support for the deal" that came together over the weekend, a source tells TVGuide.com. The latest terms are due to be presented to the WGA membership on Saturday, Feb. 9, and if the guild likes what they hear, the strike order could be lifted soon thereafter — even before it is formally ratified (a process that could take several weeks). George Clooney, who was recently (and erroneously) rumored to want to personally intervene in the talks, said at a Monday taping of AMC's Shootout Oscar Special, "We're very close to having a deal. We have a tentative agreement with the writers' guild, but it needs to be ratified by the board. I think it will be.

I just saw Michael Eisner on CNBC's Fast Money. He said that it was pretty certain that the writers would ratify this deal on Saturday. He said it was hard to imagine that it wouldn't be done by Saturday. Industry people are considering it over. So let's hope and pray this thing is over!

So, the TBD shows are up for the chop then? Hope the strike is over soon, but really wanted to be able to keep our shows. Cannot face Supernatural up for the chop again.

So, the TBD shows are up for the chop then? Hope the strike is over soon, but really wanted to be able to keep our shows. Cannot face Supernatural up for the chop again. Nor necessarily. It just means they don't know if they'd manage to produce more episodes this season. As you noticed quiet few shows won't be back before next season so hopefully the TBD would be converted into 5-7 episodes late April/May.

Wow, Lior! Great information! THANK YOU!
It looks like the networks are trying to get some of the higher rated shows to produce a bunch of new episodes for the May sweeps. That's smart, especially since the ratings are way down in February for most of the networks.
The saddest news is that the destiny of Reaper is in question. I hope that it's not going to be cancelled! That's a cool show.
It looks like some of my favorites will have more episodes. Too bad it won't be until April! But better than then the fall.
I'm most excited about Smallville. I hope they do 5 new episodes, not just 3. Then we'll have gotten 20 out of the 22 originally scheduled for the season, which is a miracle this year.
I can't imagine that they'll bring Heroes back this spring. They don't have enough time to start a new arc.
My favorites coming back:
30 Rock Expected to shoot 5 to 10 new episodes to air in April/May.
My Name is Earl Expected to shoot 8 to 10 new episodes to air in April/May.
The Office Expected to shoot 5 to 10 new episodes to air in April/May.
Smallville Five pre-strike episodes remain. Expected to shoot 3 to 5 additional episodes to air in April/May. WOO HOO!

WGA Presidents Announce WGA Member Vote to End Strike WGAE February 13, 2008 Members of WGA Vote by 92.5% to Lift Strike To Our Fellow Members:
On Tuesday, members of the Writers Guilds East and West voted by a 92.5% margin to lift the restraining order that was invoked on November 5th. The strike is over.
Writing can resume immediately. If you were employed when the strike began, you should plan to report to work on Wednesday. If you're not employed at an office or other work site, call or e-mail your employer that you are resuming work. If you have been told not to report to work or resume your services, we recommend that you still notify your employer in writing of your availability to do so. Questions concerning return-to-work issues should be directed to the WGAE's assistant executive director Ann Toback at 212-767-7823 or the WGAW legal department at 323-782-4521.
The decision to begin this strike was not taken lightly and was only made after no other reasonable alternative was possible. We are profoundly aware of the economic loss these fourteen weeks have created not only for our members but so many other colleagues who work in the television and motion picture industries. Nonetheless, with the establishment of the WGA jurisdiction over new media and residual formulas based on distributor's gross revenue (among other gains) we are confident that the results are a significant achievement not only for ourselves but the entire creative community, now and in the future.
We hope to build upon the extraordinary energy, ingenuity, and solidarity that were generated by your hard work during the strike.
Over the next weeks and months, we will be in touch with you to discuss and develop ways we can use our unprecedented unity to make our two guilds stronger and more effective than ever.
Now that the strike has ended, there remains the vote to ratify the new contract. Ballots and information on the new deal, both pro and con, will be mailed to you shortly. You will be able to return those ballots via mail or at a membership meeting to be held Monday, February 25th, 2008, at times and locations to be determined.
Thank you for making it possible. As ever, we are all in this together.
Best, Michael Winship President Writers Guild of America, East
Patric M. Verrone President Writers Guild of America, West
